Processed Foods are they bad for you?
What are processed foods and are they really bad for you or is it hype? What is in the processed foods we eat and why do they contain these additives? What would happen if we did not have any processed foods? And is there any place for them in our diets? These are a few of the questions that come to mind when I think about processed foods. Controversy over the additives in foods come out often and it is difficult to sort out all of the information presented. What are we to do? How are we to make healthy choices about what we put in our body?
We have processed foods for the convenience of a life style that we choose. When both parents work outside the home and come home tired and stressed cooking is the last thing they want to do. So we look in the fridge to see what there is to eat. The desire is to get something on the table without taking up a lot of time and effort. That’s for dinner but what about lunch. Often that is a matter of going to a restaurant because we did not pack a lunch to bring with us. Lunch time is limited to an hour or half hour and sometimes less. Definitely this allotted time is not sufficient to prepare a meal. Breakfast if it is eaten at all must be quick and easy to be able to get out the door and on our way. So a bowl of cereal may be all that is eaten to start the day. We fill our lives with activity after activity and do not stop to give any thought to how that is effecting our health and well being. Food is gobbled up and off we go to the next activity.
Another reason we have processed foods is to make food available to areas of the world that would not otherwise have access to that food source. Helping to make sure that other less fortunate parts of the world have food to eat each day. Sometimes it is to be able to provide aid when a natural disaster strikes.
